Ocracoke Restoration Work - Fall 2009

Ocracoke Lighthouse is also receiving a facelift due to stimulus monies coming out of Washington, DC. The repairs, begun in fall 2009, include: the bricks will be repointed, which means the mortar between the bricks will be strengthened and replaced;  the stairs will be refinished and painted as well as braced to allow more weight to be undertaken; windows and door will be replaced; and, a handicap ramp will be built so that those with disabilities can view the inside of the tower when volunteers are present. Repairs are expected to be complete in spring 2010.

Ocracoke Lighthouse is one of the earliest lights in N.C. and is the second longest operational light on our coast. Completed in 1823, it has become one of visitors' favorites--a long-time friend to many. History lingers in the air, and it is exciting that it is receiving deserved attention as one of our most important coastal historical sites. The new exterior lends a brand-new appearance, and interior repairs will ensure that it will serve for many years in the future.
