Bruce, Cheryl, Diana Current OBLHS Board Members
Bruce Roberts
Bruce Roberts
Bruce is co-founder of OBLHS. The former Director of Photography and Senior Photographer at Southern Living Magazine, Bruce was also a member of the legendary 1960s photo staff of The Charlotte Observer, which pioneered the use of the 35mm camera and natural light for newspaper photography. For over twenty years, lighthouses have become his favorite subject. His renowned lighthouse photography has appeared in hundreds of books and magazines including Southern Lighthouses and American Lighthouses. “Bruce Roberts has earned the right to be acknowledged as one of our era’s most important photojournalists, and although he seldom displays them, he has a room full of awards to prove it.” says Ray Jones. Bruce is the co-author and illustrator of several southern ghost books including Lighthouse Ghosts. He is also the recipient of the “Keeper of the Light” award from the American Lighthouse Foundation for his preservation work as co-founder of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society.
Cheryl Shelton-Roberts
Cheryl Shelton-Roberts
Cheryl is co-founder of OBLHS and its immediate past President. She is also the editor of the society’s award winning quarterly newsletter, Lighthouse News, now in its tenth year. A native of North Carolina, and teacher for two decades, Cheryl is now the author of several highly-acclaimed books, Lighthouse Families, Moving Hatteras: Relocating the Cape Hatteras Light Station to Safety, and North Carolina Lighthouses, just to name a few. She is tirelessly devoted to the preservation of lighthouses and the history of the keepers and their families. Cheryl is the recipient of the coveted “Keeper of the Light” award from the American Lighthouse Foundation for her volunteer work in the lighthouse community and her efforts to preserve American lighthouses and the history of the U.S. Lighthouse Service. She and her husband, Bruce Roberts live in Morehead City, NC.
Diana Chappell Diana Chappell
Diana holds the office as Treasurer for the OBLHS. She was raised as an “Air Force Brat,” and has since settled in the Richmond, Virginia suburbs.

A licensed CPA, Diana has worked in several accounting, compensation and IT positions in the private sector. She has volunteered extensively with her local chapter of Habitat for Humanities and with her Church, as a member of the Stewardship Committee being involved with various youth and mission functions over the past decade.

After driving down to North Carolina to see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move in July of 1999, Diana realized the affinity she had for the beauty and history of Lighthouses. Since that time, she has been very active in Lighthouse organizations. In 1999, she joined the CCUSLHS, where she has assisted with data entry of inspection records from the National Archives, coordinated the planning of the 2002 CCUSLHS Annual Meeting and was an on site volunteer with the 2004 Maryland Lighthouse Challenge event.

In 2000, Diana joined the OBLHS. As a member of the OBLHS, she has been responsible for mailing the Society’s newsletters to all the members since the summer of 2003. In addition, Diana has been active in the distribution and selling of raffle tickets for the OBLHS. Also a member of the Board of Directors of the OBLHS, Diana hopes her work as Treasurer will contribute to the continued growth and health of the Society, and the continued preservation work that is so important to maintain.
